Sinopec opens first station fully powered by solar energy
The Changzhou gas station will have all its energy requirements met by solar panels on the roof.
China oil giant Sinopec has started operating its first carbon-neutral petrol station in Changzhou, East China’s Jiangsu Province. The energy needs of the station are fully met by the installation of solar panels.
The opening of the station is a symbolic step for the industry toward achieving the country’s carbon emission reduction goals, reports Global Times.
The gas station’s annual power requirement is 99,000 kWh, and the photovoltaic power generation equipment on the roof can generate 127,000 to 147,000 kWh of electricity in a year, according to Sinopec.
The installation should reduce up to 105.6 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The Chinese company already runs about 160 solar plants in the country, and wants to become carbon-neutral 10 years before China’s target.
Sinopec also wants to become China’s top hydrogen company with 1,000 hydrogen refuelling stations by 2025, and operate 7,000 solar plants by then.
