SK Energy adds hydrogen to “Energy Super Stations” strategy
The company has partnered with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to expand the convergence of their businesses by waste resource utilization and electricity generation through hydrogen charging stations.
SK Energy has partnered with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to move forward with the development of its Urban Energy Super Stations and eco-friendly hydrogen convergence business.
Both companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding to spread the “Energy Super Station” concept, cooperate in establishing hydrogen charging stations as well as producing/selling electricity and hydrogen; and promote the eco-friendly hydrogen convergence business that uses waste resources.
The plan consists of utilizing SK Energy’s stations throughout South Korea as contact points with customers to establish Hybrid Energy Super Stations. These facilities produce renewable energy by utilizing existing gas station sites to charge green vehicles, and have been in the limelight as a solution for the energy self-sufficiency rate through the distributed power generation, minimization of transmission and distribution loss, and the establishment of a stable EV-charging-station network.
“Through this cooperation, we are going to speed up our efforts to transform existing gas stations into Energy Super Stations to prepare for the age of green vehicles in the future. In addition, we will actively cooperate with KHNP to make a contribution to realize Net Zero as well as vitalize distributed power generation through pioneering a new energy business,” said Chang Ho-joon, Head of Solution & Platform Business Division at Sk Energy.
Furthermore, with KHNP, the oil business affiliate of SK Innovation plans to drive the project to establish on-site hydrogen charging stations based on Trigen, the fuel cell system which enables the production of eco-friendly electricity and hydrogen at the same time.
