South Africa: Engen develops new payment solutions

Engen, South Africa`s largest fuel retailer, has updated its integrated payment solution for faster payments using contactless payment cards, as well as developing mobile payment facilities.

Joe Mahlo, General Manager of Engen Sales and Marketing, says that as the petroleum company with the largest footprint across South Africa, Engen always endeavours to be a leading example on many levels, including payments.

Contactless-enabled bank cards can be used for purchases under R200.

Furthermore, to satisfy customers’ increasing appetite for mobile payment solutions and convenience, Engen has been hard at work modifying its payment architecture to accept mobile payments, says Dumisani Bengu, manager of Engen’s retail business.

“Following the successful launch of the FlickPay proof of concept at the Engen Oranje Convenience Centre in Gardens, Cape Town, it will now be rolled out to other relevant sites,” says Bengu.

The company has also integrated RCS into its payment system for fuel and retail purchases. The RCS credit card is accepted at over 3 800 merchants across 20 890 stores nationwide and is expanding daily. In addition, Engen as a fuel partner supports RCS’s objective of expanding the current network.

Engen works mainly in the petroleum downstream sector. It currently has a network of approximately 1,500 service stations across sub-Saharian Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, with convenience stores located in 600 of their stations.
