SPAR Austria expands inventory robot pilot across stores
Retailer rolls out Tally system to reduce workload and improve shelf availability and customer service.
SPAR Austria has expanded its trial of the Tally inventory robot to six EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR locations, following positive results from an initial five-month pilot. The rollout marks a broader adoption of automation in store operations, as the retailer seeks to improve efficiency and enhance the shopping experience.
The pilot, conducted at a EUROSPAR supermarket in Vienna and an INTERSPAR hypermarket in Eisenstadt, demonstrated how digital technologies can support daily retail tasks. SPAR became the first food retailer in Austria to deploy an inventory robot in regular store operations, using the system to automate shelf monitoring and stock management.
The Tally robot moves autonomously through store aisles multiple times a day, scanning shelves to identify inventory levels, gaps and out-of-stock items. The collected data is transmitted in real time to employees’ mobile devices, enabling faster restocking without disrupting ongoing store activity.
According to SPAR, the system has improved operational efficiency by reducing the need for manual shelf checks and inventory searches. Employees spend less time on routine inspections and can focus more on customer service and in-store assistance, supporting a more responsive retail environment.
The expansion to six stores represents the next phase in SPAR Austria’s digital transformation strategy, as the retailer explores the role of automation and data in optimizing store operations. By integrating robotics into everyday workflows, the company aims to balance operational efficiency with improved customer engagement across its retail network.
