Sushi goes big in Indonesia convenience stores

Japanese cuisine is becoming a food craze in Indonesia, and Japanese restaurant chain Sato Restaurant Systems together with Indonesia’s largest convenience store chain Indomaret are taking on this opportunity to boost food sales and carry out expansion plans.

Sato has tapped Indomaret c-stores, owned by the country’s largest conglomerate Salim, to introduce sushi rolls to the Southeast Asian country, reported Nikkei Asian Review.

The Japanese company currently supplies sushi to more than 20 stores and plans to expand this to 240 in 2016 and eventually to 600 as part of its medium-term plan.

Sato’s Japanese-style bento boxed meals are also expected to augment food sales to about USD 4.4 million a year.
