U-Gas, Tri Star heed call to expand healthier food choices
Fenton, Missouri-based c-store chain U-Gas and Nashville, Tennessee-based Tri Star/Twice Daily are now part of nearly 1,000 convenience stores in the United States that have committed to The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA). They made the announcement at the National Association of Convenience Stores’ 2015 NACS Show currently held in Las Vegas, reported the CSP Daily News.
U-Gas and Tri Star/Twice Daily, which have 35 stores in Missouri and Illinois and 221 stores in Tennessee and Kentucky respectively, will collaborate with PHA to expand healthier yet affordable food choices such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, and actively engage in in-store marketing and promotion of healthier options.
“Half of the U.S. population visits a convenience store every single day, and more and more, they’re looking for healthier options, which are also more profitable for business,” said PHA CEO Lawrence A. Soler.
The two c-store chains also signed on to PHA’s Drink Up Initiative, wherein c-stores pledge to place the Drink Up logo on all water bottles to remind consumers to increase their daily water intake.
Other convenience stores which are part of PHA include Fremont, California-based Vintners Distributors, Altoona, Pennsylvania-based Sheetz, and La Crosse, Wisconsin’s Kwik Trip.
PHA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that brings together public, private, and nonprofit leaders and is committed to work with the private sector to fight childhood obesity. PHA was created in 2010 in conjunction with – but independent from – First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign. The First Lady serves as PHA Honorary Chair.
