UK’s Cornwall Garage petrol stations to have rapid electric vehicle chargers
Cornwall Garage Group plans to install rapid electric vehicle (EV) chargers at nine of its 18 petrol stations in England and is working with EV charging infrastructure provider Instavolt to install and maintain the DC chargers.
InstaVolt has installed the chargers for free and will continue to maintain and update them at no cost to the forecourt. It also pays Cornwall Garage Group a rental income in return for housing them, according to a company release.
“There’s been a bit of nervousness across the fuel retailing industry about the cost implications of installing chargers...but this arrangement means we don’t actually have to pay a penny,” said David Whistler of Cornwall Garage Group.
InstaVolt will make money from electric charging fees, but will not ask for any connection fee, minimum charge, or monthly subscription fee.
“(Petrol forecourts) are still helping people get back on the road, the only difference is motorists are topping up with electricity instead of petrol or diesel,” InstaVolt CEO Tim Payne on the crucial role of petrol stations in e-mobility.
The Cornwall Garage Group forecourts set to receive InstaVolt chargers are:

- New County Services, Clophill, Bedfordshire
- Putnoe Services, Bedford
- Exton Services, Exeter
- Honicknowle Services, Plymouth
- Bassett Services, Epping, Essex
- Shoreham Services, Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex
- Bedworth Services, Bedworth, Coventry
- Glendale Services, Nuneaton, Warwickshire
