Uruguay sets sights on first hydrogen station
The site is part of a pilot project to produce green hydrogen and will supply UPM’s fleet of 17 trucks for forestry transport.
Uruguay is preparing to welcome its first hydrogen refueling station (HRS) set to be established in the city of Durazno. As part of the H24U project for green hydrogen production, the new facility is set to supply the operations of UPM’s forestry transport fleet.
As reported by Argentinian news site Surtidores, the company responsible for the construction of the site will be granted part of the Green Hydrogen Sectoral Fund of the National Agency for Innovation and Research.
A total of 40 million dollar investment will be destined to construction operations as well as the roll out of 17 hydrogen trucks. This fund is also spearheaded by the local Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining, and the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay, alongside the National Agency.
The country aims to finance research, innovation and production projects for green hydrogen through this Fund. In addition, it aims at decarbonizing heavy-duty transport, which encompasses approximately 28% of the country’s energy demand and is currently fueled by fossil fuel derivatives in its totality.
