USA: Police call for boycott of Sunoco gas stations
The Broward County Police Benevolent Association called for a boycott of Sunoco gas stations after an officer was refused service by a clerk in Miramar, Florida.
Police say that a Sunoco gas station clerk, who had recognized a friend arrested in the back of a Miramar police car parked at the forecourt, refused to service an officer trying to buy a drink, reports the Sun Sentinel.
The incident, which took place on Sunday, July 17, has caused the firing of the clerk, an official apology from the company to the officer involved, and the Broward County Police Benevolent Association to call for a boycott on Sunoco fuel stations,
According to the report, when the police officer picked a Gatorade from the fridge the clerk, who recognized the arrested man, asked him why they had “his boy” in the back of the car. When the officer said they could not give any information, the gas station worker refused to serve him. To the question of why wouldn´t he sell him the drink, the clerk said: “Because I don´t have to, that´s why.”
"The actions described by the police officer are unacceptable and are not something that Sunoco would tolerate by any station bearing the Sunoco brand. We apologize to the officer involved, and to all law enforcement officers who were understandably offended by this incident,” said Sunoco´s statement regarding the incident.
