Swiss retailer Valora has opened its first avec store in northern Germany, bringing its award-winning “foodvenience” concept to Hamburg’s St. Georg district. The move marks a strategic step in Valora’s push to expand the brand across Germany, following its recent contract to convert around 90 of Deutsche Bahn’s ServiceStore DB outlets into avec locations.

The new Hamburg flagship is open seven days a week and targets the growing number of mobile, time-pressed consumers seeking fresh food on the go. The store offers a wide range of hot and cold snacks prepared several times a day, including Leberkäse, Frikadellen, schnitzel and paninis, alongside salads, muesli, fruit cups and sandwiches. Local classics such as Franzbrötchen complement the menu, reflecting the company’s attempt to blend convenience with regional identity.

“St. Georg is an ideal place to test and refine our concept for the German market,” said Philipp Angehrn, Managing Director Retail Germany at Valora. Its proximity to Valora’s Hamburg office, he added, allows the company to experiment directly in-store and adapt quickly to consumer trends.

Valora argues that Germany offers strong growth potential for “foodvenience,” particularly in dense urban areas, transport hubs, shopping centres and service stations. The company was recently named NACS European Convenience Retailer of the Year for its Zurich flagship, becoming the first retailer from the German-speaking world to win the award.

With about 2,800 small-format outlets across five European countries, Valora is betting that fresh, fast and flexible food retail will define the next phase of convenience shopping in Germany.
