Vietnam: Two gas stations penalised for cheating customers
Two gas stations in Hanoi, Vietnam, have been shut down temporarily after authorities found mechanisms designed to cheat customers.
Last Thursday morning security officials discovered electronic chips attached to the gas pumps of two gas stations, located in the districts of Hai Ba Trung and Gia Lam, reported Thanh Nien News.
According to the authorities, the gas station workers could control the chips from a distance, using them to sell 5% less fuel than customers could see on the screens.
Through the check inspectors found that customers were getting 19 litres for every 20 they actually paid for.
Gas station fraud is a recurring issue in Vietnam. This year the Vietnamese government has tried to crack down on these malpractices by incresing the number of inspections and fines - between April and September of 2015, inspection teams fined 232 filling stations with a total of $380,000 for overcharging related practices.
