Walmart expanding drone delivery service to six states
The goal is to have the ability to deliver over 1 million packages by drone in a year.
Retail giant Walmart announced plans to rollout its drone delivery service to six states by the end of the year, enabling consumers to get their shopping up to 30 minutes.
The company will be building on its partnership with DroneUp to expand its delivery network, making it available from 34 Walmart sites by the end of 2022, enabling the service to reach up to 4 million households in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Utah and Viriginia.
The goal is to have the ability to deliver over 1 million packages by drone in a year. Shoppers will be able to place orders for DroneUp delivery between 8am and 8pm every day, and receive their goods direct to the homes via drone.
The combined weight should be under 10 pounds, it will cost $3.99 for the delivery and will receive it via unmanned quadcopter.
“After completing hundreds of deliveries within a matter of months across our existing DroneUp hubs, we’ve seen firsthand how drones can offer customers a practical solution for getting certain items, fast. More importantly, we’ve seen a positive response from our customers that have used the service,” says David Guggina, Senior Vice President of Innovation and Automation, Walmart U.S., on their web.
Walmart joins other retailers like Amazon, as well as delivery firms like FedEx and United Parcel Service Inc., to explore delivering items using drones.
