7-Eleven trials faced recognition in Japan
Seven-Eleven Japan Co. has opened its first store equipped unmanned counters that use facial recognition systems.
The newly unveiled store, located in Minato Ward, Tokyo, only requires one worker on site. The main audience of the store will be the 4,000 employees of the NEC group companies working in the building.
The 7-Eleven is considerably smaller than other stores. Across 26 square meters, they have around 400 items on offer, reports The Japan News.
Customers need to show their company ID card at the door or have their face scanned by a camera so that it can be checked against a preregistered photo to enter the store.
7-Eleven plans to roll out the option of paying with face recognition to small-scale outlets located inside office buildings, if the trial proves successful.
