Air Liquide joins Global Hydrogen Mobility Alliance
The new industry coalition calls for targeted action to accelerate hydrogen mobility across Europe and boost the continent’s energy resilience.
Air Liquide has joined the newly formed Global Hydrogen Mobility Alliance, a strategic industry partnership aimed at advancing hydrogen-powered transport across Europe. The alliance brings together key players from the equipment manufacturing, automotive, technology, energy, and chemical sectors to promote hydrogen as a central pillar in Europe’s decarbonization and industrial strategy.
With over six decades of experience in hydrogen, Air Liquide sees this moment as critical for Europe's industrial future and energy security. “We formed this alliance to advocate for a diversified decarbonization strategy,” said Erwin Penfornis, Vice President of Air Liquide’s Hydrogen Energy business line.
“While battery electric is essential, Europe can only achieve its long-term strategic goals (sovereignty, reindustrialization, energy transition) if hydrogen mobility plays a significant role alongside battery-powered vehicles,” adds Penfornis.
The Alliance is urging the launch of a "market activation phase,"a coordinated public-private effort to deploy hydrogen refueling stations alongside commercial vehicle fleets along Europe’s key logistics corridors. The strategy draws on successful models such as the Netherlands' SWiM program and includes calls for additional incentives like road toll exemptions for zero-emission vehicles.
Air Liquide also emphasizes the importance of technological neutrality, supporting both hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen combustion engine technologies. On the supply side, the Alliance backs a phased introduction of environmental standards to give the hydrogen ecosystem time to scale up while moving toward fully decarbonized hydrogen.
The company is already investing across the value chain. This includes large-scale hydrogen production projects such as the Normand’Hy electrolyzer in France and infrastructure distribution initiatives through TEAL Mobility, a joint venture with TotalEnergies.
