Amazon will not be opening 2,000 c-stores, says company
Amazon has come out to dismiss reports it was planning to open 2,000 convenience stores.
After launching the first Amazon Go store, revolutionary concept scraps the need for cashiers, the online retailing giant has denied a story by the Wall Street Journal that stated Amazon had plans to open 2,000 stores.
"We have no plans to open 2,000 of anything. Not even close. We are still learning,” said an Amazon representative to CNBC.
The Amazon Go stores have no cashiers so customers can just go there, grab what they want, and leave. Customers need to scan their smartphones when entering the store and the company´s “just walk out” technology detects the purchased products. The first one opened in Seattle, Washington at the beginning of the week.
Amazon is trying out different store concepts before it makes a major investment in developing a large network of physical stores. In October it announced it was opening 20 stores under the ‘Fresh’ brand as part of a pilot program.
