BP to partner with local Indonesian retailer to open 350 sites

British Petroleum has laid out plans to open around 350 gas stations with convenience store in Indonesia in an effort to challenge Pertamina’s market dominance.

BP is partnering with local conglomerate AKR Corporindo to roll out a strong network of service stations in Indonesia over 10 years. AKR will take a majority stake in the joint venture.

The Indonesian retailer, which already operates 130 gas stations in Indonesia under its own brand, believes their local knowhow and BP’s brand appeal will boost their market position, AKR CEO Haryanto Adikoesoemo told The Nikkei during a visit to Japan.

With just 6,000 gas stations catering a country of 261 million, Indonesia presents a major opportunity for fuel retailing development. BP plans to offer a wide choice of convenience products adding foods, drinks and other necessities.
