Eneos launches bioethanol trials in Japan
Top Japanese automakers join nationwide effort to test low-carbon gasoline under extreme racing conditions.
Eneos Corporation has officially started verification trials of 20% ethanol-blended gasoline (E20) in collaboration with Japan’s top automakers.
The initiative was announced at a press conference on May 31 during the Eneos Super Taikyu Series 2025, where the fuel will be tested in live racing environments. The trial, part of the “All-Japan Co-Challenge of Cars and Fuel at Super Taikyu,” will involve cooperation from Subaru Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Nissan Motorsports & Customizing Co., Ltd., and Mazda Motor Corporation.
Eneos will supply the E20 fuel to these manufacturers, enabling real-time performance and durability testing under the demanding conditions of motorsport.
“As part of our long-term vision, we’re committed to delivering stable energy supplies while leading the transition toward a carbon-neutral society. Our collaboration in the Super Taikyu Series is a vital step in developing next-generation fuels that support this dual mission,” Eneos said in a statement.
As a renewable alternative, bioethanol significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by offsetting CO₂ through plant absorption during growth. Its potential role in Japan’s carbon neutrality roadmap was reaffirmed in the country’s Seventh Strategic Energy Plan, approved in February 2025.
Eneos will work with automakers and STMO, the Super Taikyu Series organizer, to gather critical data on fuel behavior in high-stress environments, such as race tracks.
