Famima!! to exit US c-store market

Famima!!, a c-store chain famous for offering traditional Japanese treats such as onigiri rice balls and bento box lunches, will close down all its eight stores in the United States by the end of October, according to CSP Daily News.

Japanese retailer FamilyMart Co. Ltd., owner of Famima!!, is shutting down the stores all located in the Los Angeles area, is liquidating Famima Corp. USA, and will pull out of the United States, reported Japanese newspaper Nikkei.

The Tokyo-based retail giant originally planned to open as many as 200 stores in the US when it launched its first Famima!! store in 2005.

However, the US expansion did not materialize and the company will instead concentrate on opening more stores in Asia, the newspaper said.

There are more than 11,100 convenience stores in Japan and more than 5,700 c-stores overseas under the FamilyMart network.
