Germany: Shell opens new LNG filling station in Thüringen
The site is the fourth in the German Shell LNG station network. The company plans to open up to 40 LNG stations in the country by the end of 2022.
Shell opened a new LNG filling station on the A4 in Thüringen, Germany. Located in an important long-distance hub, the site is the fourth of its kind in the German Shell LNG station network and makes part of the company’s initiative for cleaner heavy-duty traffic. It will have the capacity to refill up to 150 trucks per day.
In addition to expanding Shell LNG station network to up to 40 stations by the end of 2022, the energy company is moving ahead with the development of a complete supply chain for CO2-neutral LNG based on liquefied biomethane. To this end, Shell is planning to build a 100,000-tonne gas liquefaction plant at the Rhineland refinery.
"Within a few years, up to 1 million tonnes of CO2 can be saved in German heavy-duty traffic. The commissioning of the filling station near Hermsdorfer Kreuz is another important step in this direction," says Fabian Ziegler, Chairman of the Management Board of Shell in Germany.
The next Shell LNG stations in the pipeline are Kirchheim (Teck) on the A8, Weinsberg on the A6, and Herzsprung on the A24, which are scheduled to start operating in summer and autumn this year.
"We are confident that we will be able to offer a Shell LNG filling station network across Germany as early as the first quarter of 2021," said Ziegler.
Shell is the second largest petrol station operator in Germany with around 2,000 stations and serves more than 1 million customers every day.
