Hurricanes Harvey and Irma: GasBuddy rolls out app feature to report overpriced fuel
Popular mobile phone application GasBuddy calls on drivers to report overcharging fuel stations especially in the areas affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma in the United States. Areas affected include Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas.
GasBuddy, which provides real-time fuel prices and location of nearest gas stations, has seen some petrol stations in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas with fuel prices at 20 cents or more above their state averages, though price gouging is on a fairly limited basis.
To protect motorists, it has added a new feature that will allow taking and submitting photos of station prices that appear to be abnormally.
“Price ‘gouging’ in times of distress is illegal. We want to ensure that drivers who are impacted by the hurricanes do not pay more than they have to,” added the company.
