The Husky brand has officially exited Canada’s retail fuel market following the completion of BVD Petroleum’s acquisition of Husky and Cenovus travel centres, bringing an end to one of the country’s long-standing fuel retail brands.

The transaction was recently finalized after receiving regulatory clearance from Canada’s Competition Bureau, as reported by Canada Convenience Store News. The deal concludes an 18-month divestment process and paves the way for former Husky and Cenovus travel centres to transition to BVD Petroleum operations.

The acquisition represents a significant shift in Canada’s fuel retail landscape. While BVD Petroleum expands its network, Cenovus Energy is further focusing on its upstream and refining businesses following the divestment of its travel centre operations.

Prior to approving the transaction, the Competition Bureau raised concerns that the acquisition could reduce competition in a local fuel market in Ontario, where a Petro-Canada site operated by BVD and an Esso station operated by Cenovus were located in close proximity near Glendale, between St. Catharines and Niagara Falls. To address these concerns, BVD agreed to divest its Petro-Canada gas station and Petro-Pass cardlock facility at that location to a buyer approved by the regulator.

BVD Petroleum currently operates 89 fueling locations across six Canadian provinces under the Petro-Canada and Petro-Pass brands.

As part of the transition, former Husky and Cenovus locations will no longer operate under the Esso brand. The Cenovus Key to the Highway loyalty program is also being discontinued, with associated fuel cards no longer accepted after the changeover.
