Spanish Carreras Group launches H2 pilot for hauling operations

The company will integrate hydrogen into its long-distance distribution vehicles and assess the feasibility of converting combustion vehicles through an HVO and hydrogen hybrid system.

Carreras Grupo Logístico has launched an external mobility pilot that integrates hydrogen into its long-distance distribution vehicles.

This project marks a significant step in the implementation of the sustainable hydrogen ecosystem that the logistics operator has initiated at its Masquefa logistics center. The initiative represents the second phase of the company's hydrogen strategy at its Masquefa warehouse and part of a collaboration with Plug Power and Toyota Material Handling España.

Additionally, the pilot will assess the feasibility of converting combustion vehicles through an HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and hydrogen hybrid system. It will also analyze the use of this technology in different scenarios, including urban distribution, movements between logistics centers in Masquefa, Zaragoza, and Madrid, as well as customer shuttle services.

The three-month pilot is being conducted in collaboration with Repsol, Zoilo Ríos, and EVARM. It follows the development of a hybrid diesel-hydrogen tractor unit by EVARM.

Carreras aims to replicate the success of this hybrid tractor, which has achieved its second consecutive victory in the Mission 1000 category of the DAKAR rally, a category reserved for vehicles powered by alternative energies.
