India state to roll out 500 electric vehicle charging stations by 2020
India’s Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) plans to install 500 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Maharashtra by 2020 to address the scarcity of EV chargers in the Indian state, reports The Times of India.
Currently, there are only two charging stations in the state, one in Nagpur’s city airport the other at the RBI Square, both owned by app-based Indian cabs Ola.
The implementation will start in the state’s big cities like Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nagpur and Nasik, and then in tier 2 cities including Aurangabad, Amravati, and Jalgaon.
Charging stations will be close to main highways and petrol stations and equipped with facilities like restaurants, convenience stores, and washrooms. Rapid chargers will also be installed, capable of fully charging EVs in 25-30 minutes.
MSEDCL also plans to introduce a mobile app that will provide information on the charging station such as location, availability, and charging specifications.
