Jamaica: Petrojam inspects gas stations to address quality issues
Jamaica’s state-owned oil company Petrojam has started conducting sample testing of gas sold at all petrol stations in the country upon the instruction of Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell and in collaboration with the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ), reported Jamaica Observer.
This comes after the government received reports of substandard fuel sold in the market, albeit, the problem “appeared not to be widespread”.
“Petrol is very volatile commodity and we must do all we can to protect the integrity of the trade. With respect to the legal importation of petrol, we must ensure its quality from ship to pump, while every effort must be made to stamp out illicit importation of the product,” said Paulwell.
The inspection is welcomed by the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers’ Association (JGRA), according to The Gleaner.
To further address the matter, state minister for energy Julian Robinson will lead a team of regulators and industry stakeholders that will further look into the complaints and examine existing regulations on petroleum trade particularly quality control mechanisms.
