Terra Charge to deploy 2,500 NACS-compatible EV chargers across Japan
The Japanese charging network operator plans to begin adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in 2028 and build one of the country’s largest NACS charging networks by 2033.
Terra Charge has announced plans to introduce electric vehicle (EV) chargers compatible with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in Japan from fiscal year 2028, as part of a long-term strategy to support the next generation of EV charging infrastructure.
Under the plan, the company aims to install a total of 2,500 NACS-compatible charging points nationwide by fiscal year 2033, representing approximately 30% to 40% of its proprietary charging infrastructure. Terra Charge said the rollout would create one of the largest NACS charging networks in Japan.
The expansion comes as global adoption of NACS accelerates and several major automakers signal support for the charging standard. According to Terra Charge, the initiative is intended to help align Japan’s charging ecosystem with emerging international standards while improving the overall user experience for EV drivers.
In addition to rolling out NACS-compatible fast chargers, the company has begun evaluating the development of NACS-compatible AC chargers for locations such as apartment buildings, hotels and destination charging sites. The move would extend NACS support beyond rapid charging infrastructure and into everyday charging environments.
“The large-scale adoption of NACS is not simply about adding another charging standard,” said Kosuke Nakagawa, Executive Vice President of Terra Charge. “It is our commitment to elevating Japan’s EV experience to a global standard.”
The company plans to begin installing NACS chargers at commercial facilities, roadside locations and hospitality sites from 2028 onward, gradually expanding coverage across the country. At the same time, it will continue growing infrastructure that supports CHAdeMO and other charging standards currently used in Japan.
